Welcome in the month of August and the peak of the Summer season with a birding walk led by Miranda Maxwell at Kah Tai Lagoon nature park. Emphasis will be towards Waterfowl, while returning Shorebirds will garner enthusiasm along the mudbanks.
Seasonal species on the water may include Canada Geese and goslings, Mallards and ducklings, Gadwalls, Teals, Ruddy Ducks and ducklings, Hooded Mergansers and ducklings and possibly Northern Pintails, American Wigeons and Pied-billed Grebes.
Expected Shorebirds of note, such as Spotted Sandpipers, Greater/Lesser Yellowlegs, Killdeer, Western Sandpipers and Least Sandpipers are probable along the mudbanks.
Cedar Waxwings, Sparrows, Starlings, Swallows (Tree, Violet-green, Barn, Cliff) and Flycatchers (Olive-sides, Pacific-slope, Willow) may also feature trailside.
Meet in the main parking area near the RV/park host site and bathroom building. Late arrivals are welcome to find the group along the trail, waterside. Consider water, sunscreen and repellent for Summertime weather. Bring binoculars and/or a scope if you have one. Excessive winds, steady rains and/or wildfire smoke cancel.
Please help keep our birding community safe and look to join on a future outing if you have COVID or COVID-like symptoms and/or known exposure …or other flu-like/illness.
Feel free to reach out with any questions to mlmolympics@hotmail.com.
Looking forward to birding together on a Summer’s Day.
